D2 tool steels are utilised for long run tooling applications where wear resistance is crucial, such as blanking or shaping dies and thread rolling dies, in the automotive, construction, pharmaceutical / chemical, and oil & gas industries.
Highcarbon, highchromium steels, or group D steels, are examples of coldwork tool steels. These steels are classified as group D steels and include D2, D3, D4, D5, and D7. These steels have a carbon content of 1.5 to 2.35 percent and a chromium content of 12 percent. Except for type D3steel, all other group D steels are air hardened and contain 1% Mo. Oil quenching is used for Type D3 steel, while small parts can be gas quenched after austenitization with vacuum.
